Bermuda has been long recognized as one of the most favorite holiday destinations in the world. Many people come from far and wide to enjoy lazing on the magnificent beaches, playing the beautifully manicured golf courses dotted across the island, and sailing or swimming in the azure blue waters of the Atlantic. Extraordinary pleasant weather and picturesque surroundings makes it truly a beautiful place to experience and we are going to take you to two ports of call in Bermuda, Hamilton and St. George.
Hamilton, Bermuda
Hamilton is the capital and vibrant heart of Bermuda. Front Street lines the dock and is Hamilton’s main drag and centre of activity. Its pastel-painted Victorian buildings are a haven for tax-free shops selling everything from perfumes to Swiss watches. Well known as an international shopping destination, the island and its shopkeepers greet visitors with a warm welcome and one-of-a-kind items. All of their merchandise is well crafted and are stocked with many premiere brands at a lower cost than other locations. On Wednesday evenings in summer the street is closed to traffic for Harbor Nights; a weekly evening festival featuring craft and food stalls, performers and late-night shopping.
Horseshoe Bay
Due to its captivating beauty, Horseshoe Bay Beach is probably the most photographed beach in Bermuda. From small children, to senior citizens, its wide appeal makes Horseshoe Bay a must see when visiting Bermuda. With an adjacent ‘kiddy beach’, and its low tide, Horseshoe Bay Beach is definitely a spot for the entire family. Use your discretion when the waters look rough, or ask a lifeguard who is on call. The expansive horseshoe-shaped beach is bordered by cliffs and large reefs where snorkelers can explore the large variety of fish and sea life. When hunger strikes you, do not fret; there is a concession stand fully stocked with a variety of goodies.
Elbow Beach
No, this beach is not shaped like a human elbow but you can find many resting against its pink and powdery sand. Meander down Tribe Road #4, between the Elbow Beach Resort and Coral Beach Club, and you’re there. Its location on the South Shore inevitably makes it a favorite spot for swimmers, snorkellers, windsurfers, kite sailing and more. Although this beach is shared between the private Coral, Elbow, and Coco Beach Clubs, anyone can enjoy the water! Just outside the City of Hamilton, it’s the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle.
St. George, Bermuda
The town of St. George is quite different from Hamilton. It is much smaller and quieter, but well worth the visit. St. George was the first capital of Bermuda, having first been settled by shipwrecked British settlers in 1609. Many of those settlers went onto Jamestown, Virginia, but some stayed in Bermuda. Take a walk up the hill to the Unfinished Church. This interesting Gothic structure built in 1874 provides a wonderful view of the village below. It was never finished due to lack of funds and political conflict. Continue towards Fort St. Catherine, stroll through the local golf course to picturesque Tobacco Bay and onto St. Catherines Beach next to the fort. This impressive fortress was first built in 1614 and then rebuilt in 1812. Do the self-guided tour and enjoy seeing the tunnels and the underground areas of this marvelous edifice.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charlestons has a rich, but tumultuous past – the city is truly a living museum. It is now thriving and making even more history as home to some of the best cuisine and festivals the country has to offer. Avail of the many historical Charleston tours that include at least one hundred points of interest about Charleston history, with a stop at Charleston’s picturesque Battery for closer views of Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter and Patriots Point. A great opportunity for waterfront photos, so be sure to bring your camera! From the American Revolution to the Civil War and from pirates to ghosts, touring the city will entertain you with 300 years of colorful Charleston history. You’ll learn the city’s pivotal role in American history and see many historic and architecturally- significant sites such as Rainbow Row, Colonial Lake, the Old Exchange Building, many churches and Whitepoint Gardens. Also not to be missed is the historic restored home of Joseph Manigault. Constructed in 1803 and is now one of the city’s most graceful and significant buildings. The home, built in the Federal Style, is a perfect example of a residence for a wealthy, 18th century rice planter’s family and slaves.
